As the world is being swept up by the Twitter bug, more and more small and medium sized business owners are considering, what is twitter and what can it do for my business?

What is twitter?

Twitter is like the newspaper boy standing on the street corner yelling, 'Extra, extra, read all about it! New medium for business! Read all about it!' It is a headline, a blast of information, news or opinion that is being broadcast. But in Twitter's case, instead of just passersby getting the news, people who have opted-in (your followers) see your headlines first, and instead of only people in a restricted area getting the information, it is open for the entire online world to hear...

Social media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube – conjures up images of spur-of-the-moment personal remarks, bursts of conversation and invitations to events. However, in the small business world, we are just starting to understand the power of social media as a business tool and how best to use it.

Sure the aim is to be spontaneous with your tweets, show personality through Facebook, and engage your audience with organic conversation – but the power of social media can only be harnessed with a strategy-objectives and guidelines that will help you achieve your overall communication goals, save you time and help your business stay active and relevant online.

Technical Tips for Twitter - Rebecca Gooch

So you’ve signed up, but have you joined the conversation?

If you’ve taken the first step of your Twitter journey, it’s important to stay on track. So here are some quick tips to help you along your way.

1. Download a desktop feed program - such as twhirl, Twitterrific or Snitter. These programs allow you to remain logged in and have new tweets pop-up on your desktop. This is great for regular ‘tweeters’ as well as those once-a-week users, as it ensures you keep up with the conversation and don’t miss out on exciting opportunities (and saves you the hassle of continually logging in!).
2. Reply to people – Get in conversations by either pressing the “reply to” button to the right of a tweet or by typing the @ symbol before the person’s username, e.g. @ZadroComms. This is a sure way to attract more followers as the more interactive you are the more people will notice you.
3. Re-tweet – If you read something you like, re-tweet it for all your followers to see BUT be sure to precede the tweet with the letters RT (= Re-tweet). Eg. RT @ZadroComms. This gives credit to the original tweeter.
4. Create discussion topics – If you want to start a discussion on Twitter, place the hash symbol before the subject (e.g. #twitterforsmallbiz). This is a great way to create a hot topic and build conversation about issues relevant to your business. It also makes it easier to find all relevant tweets about topics when searching.
5. Check to see if people are tweeting about you – This can be done very easily by clicking the @ symbol followed by your username, underneath ‘Home’ on the right hand side. This will list all the recent tweets that have mentioned you.
6. Upload images with TwitPic to make your account visual & fun – You can upload photos via www.twitpic.com . If you have a Twitter account, you already have a TwitPic account.
